Where Blue Holds Distant Ground II
Atmospheric Blue Series — Blue as Behaviour · 2026
127 H × 137 W cm | Acrylic, gesso, modelling paste, natural sediments from Serra da Estrela and natural palm fibres from Cabo Verde on unprimed raw cotton canvas | Original artwork · Stretched · Framed
Where Blue Holds Distant Ground II examines how material accumulation can hold a sense of distance without representing landscape.
Natural sediments from the Seia River and Lagoa Comprida enter the surface alongside gesso, modelling paste and natural palm fibres from Cabo Verde. Through absorption, sedimentation, abrasion and layering, these materials create shifts between mineral density, exposed cotton and atmospheric blue.
The painting changes with light, viewing distance and position. From across a room, the blue and mineral passages establish an atmospheric field; at closer range, sediment, fibres, abrasion and variations in surface density become increasingly visible.

FOR ARCHITECTS & INTERIOR DESIGNERS:
At 127 × 137 cm, Where Blue Holds Distant Ground II combines architectural presence with a more adaptable scale for residential, hospitality, wellness and professional interiors. Its perception changes with natural and artificial light, viewing distance and movement through the space.
For architectural and interior projects, Sonia Jeronimo Studio can provide technical information regarding placement, framing, lighting, delivery and installation.

PHOTOGRAPHY & COLOUR ACCURACY:
The work contains variations of atmospheric blue, mineral blue-grey and darker sedimented passages, combined with exposed areas of raw cotton and materially active surface detail.
Under diffused natural daylight, tonal transitions and the distinction between pigment, sediment and exposed support become more visible. Under warmer artificial light, the denser passages acquire greater weight and the relief created by gesso, modelling paste, mineral matter and fibres becomes more pronounced. Directional or lateral light reveals abrasion, accumulation and changes in surface reflectivity.
Digital photography cannot reproduce the full range of chromatic, tactile and material changes experienced when viewing the original work.
