When Blue Becomes a Territory II
Atmospheric Blue Series — Blue as Behaviour · 2026
235 H × 215 W cm | Mixed media on canvas | Original artwork · Unstretched · Unframed
When Blue Becomes a Territory II approaches blue as a material condition shaped by absorption, gravity, sedimentation and abrasion rather than as a fixed colour or representation.
Across the surface, mineral depth, exposed passages and accumulated layers create a field of partial concealment and release. Blue appears within paler interruptions and darker passages, while pronounced vertical movement meets irregular crossing marks. The work remains abstract, holding openness and enclosure in tension rather than resolving into landscape.
At 235 × 215 cm, the painting is encountered in direct relation to the body and to architecture. From a distance, its contrasts gather into a substantial spatial presence; at closer range, individual marks, tonal transitions and material shifts become increasingly visible.
The work draws conceptually on geological processes associated with Serra da Estrela, Portugal — erosion, weathering, sedimentation and material transformation — without depicting the territory. These processes inform how matter is allowed to move, accumulate and remain visible within the painted surface.

FOR ARCHITECTS & INTERIOR DESIGNERS:
At 235 × 215 cm, When Blue Becomes a Territory II is a monumental work conceived for spaces with sufficient viewing distance and wall scale. It is particularly suited to large residential, hospitality, corporate, wellness and contemplative interiors where the painting can operate as an architectural presence rather than as decoration.
As an unstretched work, it can be professionally stretched and framed according to the requirements of the project. Sonia Jeronimo Studio can provide technical information regarding wall requirements, placement, stretching, framing, lighting, delivery, handling and installation.

PHOTOGRAPHY & COLOUR ACCURACY:
The artwork contains mineral blue, turquoise, blue-grey, navy and deep blue-black tones. Their relationships shift according to the quality, temperature and direction of the light.
Under diffused natural daylight, lighter mineral and turquoise passages become more visible and transitions between pale and darker areas are easier to distinguish. Under warm artificial light, navy and deep blue-black passages gain greater density. Directional or lateral light reveals abrasion, vertical movement, crossing marks, accumulated layers and subtle variations in surface reflectivity.
Digital photography cannot reproduce the complete tonal depth, chromatic behaviour and material complexity of the original painting. Screen calibration, white balance, ambient light, image compression and online colour profiles may alter the relationship between turquoise, mineral blue and darker passages. Online and printed images are therefore representative only; the original artwork remains the definitive reference for colour, surface, scale and tonal depth.
